The Basics

Race format

Our championship season is held over five weekends across the UK. The courses that we lay are normally about 2.5 to 3 nautical miles in lap length, with one longer lap that has to be completed. Keeping the course size to a minimum allows us to run the races in areas that the public can easily view, whilst keeping it easier for us to film and control.

The following points are awarded for each race; 1st=20 points, 2nd=17 points, 3rd=15 points, 4th=14 points, 5th=13 points, 6th=12 points, 7th=11 points, 8th=10 points, 9th= 9 points, 10th=8 points, 11th=7 points, 12th=6 points, 13th= 5 points, 14th= 4 points, 15th= 4 points, 16th= 2 points, 17th= 1 point.

Regulations

Regulations are simple. You are not allowed to modify anything on the boat or the engine to gain performance, all boats must use the same propeller which is issued by the series organiser at the start of the season, by doing this we ensure that the class does not become a cheque book racing class and racing on a budget can be achieved, it also keeps it simple for us to police.

Boats

225 Class:This is a Cougar 27’ twin stepped deep V, the hull has been designed with racing in mind, it features Kevlar construction and in built in water ballast tank, but still has the rear bench seat to allow the boat to be used for pleasure boating between races. A fairing covers this seating area when the boat is being raced. The top speed of this boat is 67 to 70mph.

BF150 Class:This boat is based on a Ring 21’, last year the design went through a facelift with a new deck design and some hull changes, whist keeping the original running surface shape. There is seating for 5 people and a small cuddy cabin. The top speed of this boat is 55mph.

Support

At each race we take our Honda Workshop Truck which contains engine spares, spare engines and boat parts. Cougar Marine have a team of mechanics on site to sort any engine problems that may be encountered, in the event of a problem that cannot be fixed then Cougar will fit a spare engine and the problem engine is repaired upon returning to the workshop.

TV Coverage

In September ITV4 broadcast ten 25-minute programs (Five covering the 150-class and five covering the 225-class). Once they have been broadcast the programs are then passed onto Sky TV and offered to a number of other satellite channels.
